The final score read: Winnipeg Goldeyes 14, University of Winnipeg Wesmen 0. But the score wasnt important. What was important was the fact pitching coach Bill Pulsipher got nine innings of work from six different pitchers and manager Rick Forney got another good look at a handful of young players fighting for the few available jobs on the Goldeyes roster. "Everybody got to play a baseball game," Forney said after the game. "The pitchers got their work and that was the most important thing. We needed to get those guys out there on the mound and they did a good job." On the field, it was really quite unfair for a first-year Canadian university program to face an independent professional team, but the Wesmen did a nice job and certainly didnt embarrass themselves. "They settled down after the first couple of innings and played a lot better," said Forney. "It was pretty fast for them at the start and they were kicking it around a bit. I think they were probably pretty nervous. But once they settled down, they played pretty well. It was a good time." The Goldeyes scored two in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth. In the end, the Goldeyes scored 14 runs on 17 hits while the Wesmen had no runs on one hit. The only Goldeyes pitcher to allow a hit was Anthony Friesen, the local kid from Somerset, Man. Offensively, the Goldeyes got a two-run homer from Dan Barbero and a three run bomb from Chris Roberson. Rookie David Narodowski had two doubles and drove in four runs while Price Kendall had four hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. "It was a good game to be a part of," Kendall said. "It was a good reminder of what baseball is all about. We get paid to do this, but those college kids are doing it for fun. Its a kids game and were lucky that we get to play it as adults. And I remember, when I was a college kid, I idolized the pros, major or minor league. It was fun to be on the field with them." Kendall has struggled at the plate before Friday nights game and was pleased that he had a chance to work on a few things. "I had a lot of things to work on," he said with a smile. "Until tonight, I hadnt had a hit. I wanted to work on my approach at the plate, let the ball get deeper and hit it up the middle. I was swinging a lot better tonight." Among the other highlights: Yurendell de Caster had had two hits and two RBI; Matt Cusick had a hit three walks and two runs scored; and Kyle Day had three hits and an RBI. The Goldeyes will now get on the bus and head south. They will play pre-season games in St. Paul on Sunday afternoon and Monday night, another pre-season game on Tuesday night -- a seven-inning game starting at 8 p.m. in Kansas City -- and then the regular season starts next Friday in Amarillo. "Its going to be quite a trip," said Kendall with a grin. "When we get back well either all be best friends or worst enemies. One things for sure, well know each other pretty well by the time its over." Randal Holt and Carlton Guyton added 13 points and six rebounds apiece. Rob Jones scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Saint Marys-CA (25-9), while Matthew Dellavedova turned in 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Mitchell Young finished with 15 points and eight boards. Mike Iupati Jersey . PAUL, Minn. LOS ANGELES -- The slumping Los Angeles Dodgers held a players-only, closed-door meeting before their series finale against the New York Mets, then went out and put a stop to their five-game skid. "Its so cliche. Now guys have a meeting and you go out and win," Tony Gwynn Jr. said after the Dodgers won 6-0 Thursday night. "It definitely wasnt rah-rah. You can very easily fall into accepting losing. The meeting was called so it didnt get to that point." Clayton Kershaw scattered five hits over eight innings and the Dodgers parlayed extra-base hits by Matt Kemp, Juan Uribe, Aaron Miles and Dioner Navarro into a five-run sixth inning that ended the Mets four-game winning streak and kept them from sweeping the Dodgers for the first time in four games at Chavez Ravine. "It felt really good, especially with the stadium packed," said Kemp, who spoke at the meeting. "Wed been seeing a lot of yellow seats out there." Kershaw (9-4) struck out nine and walked two in his last start before the All-Star break. The left-hander, who will pitch in his first All-Star game next week in Phoenix, came within one strikeout of his fourth straight double-digit game, something that hadnt been done by a Dodgers pitcher since Hideo Nomo in 1995. "We definitely needed a win. We hit well, played defence well," he said. "Everybody is a little bit happier. Maybe this will spark us back to the good old days." Kershaw got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by striking out Ronny Paulino to end the inning after getting a visit from manager Don Mattingly. "When we had the bases loaded, he threw me a filthy curveball on a 2-2 count after throwing me four fastballs about 94-95," Paulino said. "Hes a power pitcher and he knows how to pitch in and out and use his changeup and curve when he has to, even behind in the count. Hes tough to guess against, so you have to focus on getting good pitches to hit and hope hell make a mistake that you can take advantage of." The crowd cheered when Kershaw stayed in the game. "Ive blown the game twice when hes come out and left me in. I was due," Kershaw said. "I threw too many pitches in the eighth and laboured a little bit. My fastball command wasnt that good, so it was definitely good to get out of it." The Mets loaded the bases again in the ninth against Kenley Jansen before Hong-Chih Kuo got the final two outs. Dillon Gee (8-3) gave up five hits and six runs -- five earned -- struck out two and walked one to lose his second straight. Mets shortstop Jose Reyes went on the 15-day disabbled list Thursday with a strained left hamstring that will cause him to sit out the All-Star game, although he will still attend.dddddddddddd Manager Terry Collins hopes Reyes can return by July 22, when the Mets open a series at Florida. After scoring just five runs in losing the first three games of the series, the Dodgers went on a roll in the sixth inning, sending nine men to the plate. Gwynn singled to lead off, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Paulino. After Jamey Carroll grounded out, Andre Ethier walked. Gwynn and Ethier scored on Kemps RBI double to left field. Uribes ground-rule double scored Kemp before Miles RBI double brought Uribe home. Navarros triple into the right field corner scored Miles. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead on Miles sacrifice fly in the second. Uribe was hit in the left elbow by a pitch with one out. Gee knocked down James Loneys comebacker, tried for the force at second and made a throwing error that allowed Uribe to take third. Uribe and the throw from Canadian left-fielder Jason Bay got to the plate at the same time and umpire Greg Gibson called Uribe safe, even though the TV replays showed Paulino tagged Uribes right knee before his leg touched the plate. Collins vehemently argued with Gibson to no avail. "Its a tough call because it was a bang-bang play," Paulino said. "I moved right in front of the plate when the ball got to me, but he must have thought that I was behind the plate and that he touched the plate first." Gibson was involved in a blown call at first base on Wednesday night. Ethier hit an opposite-field RBI single through the left side and Kemp followed with what appeared to be a double-play grounder to shortstop. But Gibson ruled Kemp beat the relay, bringing Collins out of the dugout for a brief argument. TV replays also showed Gibson got that one wrong. Carroll took third on the fielders choice grounder and scored on Uribes sacrifice fly -- which would have been the third out.
