WASHINGTON -- Mikhail Grabovski tied the score with 5:32 left in the third period and had the go-ahead goal in a shootout to help the Washington Capitals snap their four-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Braden Holtby kicked away attempts by Alex Galchenyuk and Tomas Plekanec, giving Washington a 3-2 edge in the shootout. Eric Fair, who had a goal and an assist in regulation, also scored in the tiebreaker for the Capitals along with Alex Ovechkin. Plekanec had a goal and an assist for Montreal, which had won four straight. Daniel Briere added a goal and Brian Gionta assisted on both regulation scores for the Canadiens. Lars Eller and David Desharnais connected in the shootout for Montreal. The evening began in bizarre fashion for Washington. After a pregame, lower-body injury to goalie Michal Neuvirth, the Capitals hastily signed video coach Brett Leonhardt to back up Holtby, who finished with 35 saves. In a similar situation in December 2008, Washington suited up Leonhardt -- a former college goalie -- for a game. Montreal outshot Washington 13-4 in the first period and broke on top at the 15:20 mark when Capitals defenceman Alexander Urbom failed to clear a puck from behind the net and Briere scored on a wraparound between the legs of Holtby. Washington tied it 5:17 into the second period on a similar failure to clear by Montreal. Grabovski took the puck off the stick of Canadiens goalie Peter Budaj behind the net and directed it toward Fehr, who scored into an open goal. But the Canadiens answered 67 seconds later in transition when Gionta centred to Plekanec, whose glancing shot bounced past Holtby. Budaj finished with 24 saves. He was trying to win at Washington for the second time in eight days. A week earlier, he withstood a barrage of shots in the third period of Montreals 3-2 victory. NOTES: Leonhardt was a goalie at Oswego State and Neumann University. ... Washington forward Brooks Laich missed his first game of the season. Little-used Jay Beagle took the place of Laich, appearing for just the 13th time in two seasons under coach Adam Oates. PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- David Ferrer kept alive Spains hopes of winning a fourth Davis Cup title in five years by beating Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the first reverse singles match Sunday to level the final at 2-2. The fifth-ranked Ferrer won 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to improve his career record against Berdych to 6-3. That means the best -of-five series will be decided in the final match between Radek Stepanek and Nicolas Almagro. Ferrer, who is wrapping up the best season of his career having won a tour-best seven tournament titles, converted his first match point when Berdychs forehand hit the net, bringing cheers from the boisterous section of Spanish fans at the O2 Arena. "Im very happy with my game," Ferrer said. "I played very focused, very aggressive. I started really good. Maybe the key was I began really good." The Spaniard never seemed in trouble despite playing on a fast indoor hard court at the O2 Arena that was supposed to benefit his big-hitting opponent. Ferrer broke Berdych early in each set to take control, cruising to victory in 2 hours, 25 minutes. Berdych was broken in the third game of the third set before producing a late but brief fightback to level at 4-4. But Ferrer proved too good to allow any drama, breaking again for a 6-5 lead and serving out the match at love.dddddddddddd. It was Ferrers 76th win of the year. "It was the best season of my career," he said. The Czechs are seeking to complete a rare double just two weeks after the women secured the Fed Cup title in the same arena. No country has won both competitions in the same year since the United States in 1990. Spain, which is without the injured Rafael Nadal, is looking for its sixth title overall. The Czechs only victory came in 1980 as Czechoslovakia, which split in 1993. Berdych spent more than seven hours on the court in the previous two days to win both his opening singles and the doubles, and it looked like fatigue may have finally set in at the end of the long season. "Yes, he played a lot of matches," Ferrer said. "He played five sets with Nicolas (on Friday) and four sets yesterday." Ferrer, who has been unbeaten in the Davis Cup since 2010, broke Berdychs first service game to jump to a 3-0 lead. Looking troubled by Ferrers attacking play, Berdych didnt win a single point in the Spaniards first two service games. Ferrer started brightly the second set again, breaking Berdych with a forehand winner. He converted his first set point when Berdych could only return his drop shot into the net. ' ' '
