COLUMBIA, S. Dunta Robinson Jersey .C. -- In a career of special moments, Steve Spurrier added another one in South Carolinas victory over fifth-ranked Georgia. And there may be some even bigger ones ahead for the Gamecocks and their ball coach. Connor Shaw threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, Ace Sanders had a dazzling 70-yard punt return touchdown and No. 6 South Carolinas defence dominated fifth-ranked Georgia in a 35-7 victory Saturday night. "If we play like this, maybe we have a chance for a real big year," Spurrier said. "Maybe." Spurriers caution is well placed. After all, this is the Southeastern Conference. The Gamecocks (6-0, 4-0 SEC) head to angry LSU, the defending league champions who lost for the first time earlier Saturday, next week night, then go to Florida -- the undefeated Gators beat LSU -- for a game that should decide the Eastern Division. South Carolina sure looks ready for the challenge. "We definitely sent a message out to the whole country," Gamecocks tailback Marcus Lattimore said. "Its not the old South Carolina. We can play with yall. We can play with anybody." The Gamecocks their school-record 10th straight game with a performance that marked certainly marked them an Eastern Division front-runner -- and maybe showed theyre capable of even more. "This was a special one," said Spurrier, who has a national title on his impressive resume from his time with Florida. "It really was." South Carolina grounded "Gurshall," holding Georgias stellar freshmen Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall to 76 yards combined. The Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1) finished with 224 yards, less than half their seasons average coming in. "First of all, the bad news is we took a whipping. The good news is we all took it together. It was a team loss," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. Lattimore ended with 109 yards and a touchdown, the third straight time hes gone past the century mark on the Bulldogs. Coincidence the Gamecocks have posted their first-ever three game win streak in the series that began in 1894? The Gamecocks 10th straight victory surpasses a school best set with their 9-0 start in 1984. That team reached No. 2 in the country and were poised for the top spot when No. 1 Nebraska lost, but South Carolina fell to Navy to lose perhaps its best-ever shot at a national champion. This South Carolina team showed the brand of championship defence usually found on the SECs best teams. Georgia came in with a league-leading 48.2 points and 536 yards a game of offence -- and where shut down by the Gamecocks. Gurley and Marshall kept pounding the line to little effect, held scoreless after combining for 294 yards and five TDs in last weeks win over Tennessee. Aaron Murray was 11 of 31 for 109 yards. He was sacked twice and threw one interception. The game figured to be a matchup of Georgias explosive offence against South Carolinas impenetrable D. The Gamecocks showed early it was no contest, holding the Bulldogs to just 111 yards of offence in the first half and taking control of the game. South Carolinas offence set the tone at first, Spurrier once again showing there are few better at calling plays. Damiere Byrd outfought Georgias Bacarri Rambo for a 42-yard catch on the games second snap. Two plays later, Shaw hit a wide-open Bruce Ellington for a 20-yard TD catch that sent the record crowd of 85,199 into a frenzy. They had more to celebrate moments later when Kelcy Quarles tipped Murrays pass high in the air and safety DeVonte Holloman made a diving interception. Shaw cashed in again for the Gamecocks, ending a 69-yard sequence when tight end Rory Anderson came open in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown. South Carolina used special teams -- typically a Georgia strength -- to extend the lead a few plays later after a three-and-out by the Bulldogs. Sanders bobbled the punt, got the ball back, broke several tackles and outrun the punter to the left pylon for a 21-0 lead with less than nine minutes gone. The Gamecocks defence took control after that. Georgia "didnt move it very far when they were out there," Spurrier said with a grin. South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney sacked Murray for a loss of 6 yards to stall one series. Gurley and Marshall were continually swallowed up for minimal gains. The Bulldogs looked as if theyd found their footing right before halftime, Murray converting three third-down passes to get to the Gamecocks 4. But on fourth-and-goal, Rantavious Wooten was stopped shy of the end zone after catching a short pass by D.J. Swearinger and Shaq Wilson. First-year defensive co-ordinator Lorenzo Ward thought his team could put on a show against the high-powered Bulldogs. "I believe in the young men that I coach every day, I believe in the system that we run and I believe we can play with anybody," he said. The biggest drama of the second half was whether Georgia would leave with its first shutout since a 31-0 loss to Alabama in 1995. Spurrer kept his defensive starters in, yet the Bulldogs drove 75 yards to score on Ken Malcomes 3-yard TD run with 1:55 to go. Malcome finished as the teams top rusher with 45 yards, all on Georgias scoring drive. "We hoped to make a play to change momentum but they never allowed us to," Richt said. Stephen Nicholas Jersey . ATLANTA -- Matt Ryan took an awful beating. Another win for the Atlanta Falcons will make the pain a lot easier to take. Shaking off a career-high seven sacks, Ryan completed a 59-yard pass to Roddy White with about a minute remaining, setting up Matt Bryants 40-yard field goal that kept the Falcons perfect on the season with a wild 30-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. After squandering a 24-14 lead in the second half, the Falcons needed a crucial fumble by Cam Newton to even have a chance -- and they still faced long odds when the Panthers downed a punt at the Atlanta 1 with 1:09 remaining. Ryan had no timeouts and surely some doubt about how much time his beleaguered offensive line would give him. But he dropped back about as far as he could, threw it about as far as he could, and relied on White to go up and make the catch. He did, between two defenders. Bryants kick won it with 5 seconds remaining. "We made the plays when we needed to," said Ryan, who passed for 369 yards and three touchdowns. "Thats what you need to do week to week in this league." The Falcons (4-0) are off to their best start since 2004, when they reached the NFC championship game. This was their stiffest challenge yet. "That was exciting. Whew!" said coach Mike Smith, finally able to exhale. "Every time it looked bleak, every time it looked like we didnt have a chance, we were able to overcome it." Newton threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score. But he let the ball slip away when it looked as though he had clinched the victory for the Panthers (1-3). "You have to protect the football," Newton said. "That was a key focus going into this game, and I fumbled. Theres a lot of guys that are trusting the ball carrier, and I was the ball carrier that particular play to get the job done. And I dropped the ball." On third-and-2 at the Atlanta 46, Newton took the snap and bulled his way over the left side, his body surging across the spot needed for the first down. On the sideline, several of the Panthers broke into a celebration. But John Abraham knocked it loose, the ball squirting backward. Fullback Mike Tolbert covered it for Carolina at the 45 -- 1 yard shy of a first down. After attempting unsuccessfully to draw the Falcons offside, the Panthers punted it away. Ryan and White took advantage of another chance. "I threw it high and far to the spot we talk about," Ryan said. "Roddy went up and made a great catch. When youre in that situation late in the game, thats what you have to do." White was sandwiched between cornerback Josh Norman and safety Haruki Nakamura, but managed to leap over both of them to bring down the pass at the Carolina 40. A pass interference call and two short completions made things easier for Bryant, who had already connected from 41 and 33 yards to improve to 8 for 8 on the season. Tony Gonzalez Camo Jersey. Make it 9 for 9. The kick was straight down the middle. With Julio Jones hindered by an injured right hand, White came up with a huge game for the Falcons. He had eight catches for 169 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. But his biggest catch was the final one. "Matt told me he was going to throw it up there. Just make a play," White said. "Not for one second did we think we were going to lose the game." Ryan credited his offensive line on the final drive, even though they struggled most of the day to keep him upright against Charles Johnson and the rest of the Panthers defence. Johnson spent so much time in the backfield he shouldve worn an Atlanta jersey, finishing with 3 1/2 sacks. Ryan was hit 12 times after throwing and hurried on at least a half-dozen other attempts. "The offensive line did a great job," Ryan said, all evidence to the contrary. "If youre going to throw the football that far down the field, you need some time. The guys did a great job of pass protection, giving us time to throw it down there." Newtons fumble ruined what had been a stellar performance. He threw for 215 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown to Greg Olsen early in the game, then a 36-yard scoring play to Kealoha Pilares that put the Panthers ahead 28-24 with 7:55 remaining. Newton also ran for 86 yards on nine carries, bulling his way into the end zone from 4 yards out late in the third quarter. The Panthers played much better than they did in their previous outing, a 36-7 home loss to the New York Giants, but it wasnt enough to prevent them from sliding a daunting three games behind Atlanta in the NFC South. "I want to apologize to my teammates and the fans that were watching out there," Newton said. "Everybody was doing their job. I clearly had the first down, but Ive just got to hold onto the football." Ryan also connected on a 60-yard touchdown with Michael Turner, who took a screen pass right about the line of scrimmage and zigzagged down the field for the first scoring reception of his nine-year career. DeAngelo Williams scored Carolinas other TD on a 13-yard run. Notes: The Falcons failed to score a TD on their opening possession for the first time this season, going three-and-out.
